Our Board of Directors are elected to one year terms. Many serve multiple terms. The Board includes the President, the Vice President, the Treasurer, and the Secretary as well as other volunteers who are willing to lead our programs and initatives (like our Scholarship Program, Our Book Donations program, Our Liasion to Schools and Libraries program, and serving as Manager of our storage warehouse. The Board of Directors works closely with Sumter County Libraries, as well as local schools.
We have three Bookrooms within two of the county libraries - at Pinellas and Belvedere. The space is given to us by Sumter County in order to sell donated books, puzzles, DVDs, and more.
Belvedere has one Bookroom that includes all items and Pinellas has a Fiction Bookroom and a Non-Fiction Bookroom. Bookroom Managers ensure Volunteers have training to work shifts in the Rooms and they also keep the Bookrooms stocked along with forms, information about Friends of the Villages Library, etc.
All volunteers who wish to work 3-hour shifts in a Bookroom must be a Member of The Friends Of The Villages Library and receive training before working. Tasks included in this position include accepting donations of books, puzzles, DVDs, etc., stocking and selling the same donations to our customers, keeping books on the shelves in order, answer questions from customers, work at scheduled sales, and more.
Volunteer Drivers and Box Handlers (our Heroes!)
As you might expect, we need volunteers who can pick up Donations from people's homes and estate sales and bring them to our storage warehouse and unload them, load and unload boxes of Donations for our sales, etc.
Can you provide help with either of the following activities?
Drivers and Box Movers who can Support our Public Sales We have public sales of our contributed books on a schedule; usually between 6 or 8 weeks apart. You would be a critical component of our Overstock sales. Do you have a little muscle and some spare time? Do you want to give more community help hours? A van or SUV would be nice but not required. A little practice with a two-wheel hand truck and you're in business. You would help with getting boxes of books and 13 tables out of our storage warehouse, loading them into a rented (at our expense) truck and unloading them into the sale venue (always on a Friday around 3:00 p.m.) Or you could volunteer to transport the 13 tables back to our storage warehouse on the following Monday when the sale closes.
Drivers and Box Movers Who are Willing to Pick Up and Deliver Books To Our Storage Warehouse We often receive large Donations from the public that need to be collected and brought to our storage warehouse. We also get Donations from estate sales and people's homes. These also go to the storage warehouse. We need volunteers who can be available on an "as needed" basis when we have Donations that need to be collected.
